JBO

Cleveland Baseball is a part of JBO, playing in the CCJBA district.

JBO has three levels of play:

Federal, American and National

  • National is the most relaxed, akin to a "Rec" level. This level does not include weekend tournaments and has a lighter practice schedule. At the Minor level (3rd / 4th Graders), we call our National level "CNL" which means "Cleveland National League".  For CNL, we compete against each other vs. other towns.
  • American is more competitive than National and is for kids who have assessed at a higher skill level and who are wanting to play in more competitive games.
  • Federal is for players who assess at the highest skill level for their age group and who can compete vs. the best teams in the area.

Cleveland Youth Baseball picks teams based on its goal of grouping together players of similar skill levels within the JBO framework detailed above.

Cleveland Youth Baseball does its best to form teams at the National, American and Federal levels each year, as long as we have enough players / head coaches per level.

  • When Does This Start?: JBO Baseball starts at the Minor Federal level, aka 3rd & 4th grade.

  • Who We Play: We play teams from other towns: Nelson, Oregon City, Tualatin, Canby, Estacada, Milwaukie, etc.

  • Regular Season: Consists of 16-18 league games, played primarily across May and June.

  • Weekend Tournaments: American & Federal teams usually play in 2-4 "Weekend Tournaments", primarily across the months of May and June. Weekend tournaments normally consist of 2 games played on Saturday and 1-2 on Sunday. Note: An additional one time "Weekend Tournament" fee will be invoiced to all players of American & Federal teams.

National, American, Federal - End of Season Tournaments:

Each of these levels holds an end of season County Tournament for qualifying teams. Top teams from the County Tournaments earn their way to the JBO State Tournament.

These tournaments can happen anywhere from the end of June through end of July. Exact dates are provided each season.

Important: Players accepting invites to American & Federal level teams must commit to being available for end of season County & State tournament dates.

Player Assessments

Assessments consist of skills assessments across key baseball disciplines of hitting, throwing, pitching and defense.

Assessors & Coach Observers

  • Quantitative: Core skills assessments will be done by CYBS board members, former coaches or select current coaches. These skill assessments ultimately assign individual and cumulative scores for each player.

  • Qualitative: Coach observers will also be present to record qualitative feedback at each station. These coaches are able to provide written feedback on a player and to provide narrative on where players are on their player development journey.

Team Formation

  • Teams are ultimately formed based on assessment results and informed by feedback from prior year coaches + coach observer feedback.

Ultimately CYBS picks teams based on its goal of grouping together players of similar skill levels. This is the requirement of CCJBA of JBO and the goal of CYBS when forming teams.
